What Pool Removal Costs in Sydney

Pool removal prices vary more than people expect. Almost all of that variation comes from four things — and you can usually spot them from the back door.

The bands

What pool removal jobs across Greater Sydney typically cost in 2026. Planning ranges only.

Job Typical range
Portable / above-ground spa $800 – $2,500
In-ground spa $3,500 – $9,000
Fibreglass pool removal $7,000 – $16,000
Concrete pool fill-in (partial removal) $9,000 – $20,000
Concrete pool full removal $14,000 – $35,000+
Large or difficult-access concrete pool Priced individually

These assume a typical suburban pool, draining included, and backfill to compacted fill level.

The four things that move the price

1. Access

The single biggest factor.

Access Effect
Driveway or wide gate to the pool Lowest cost
Side path 1.2–2.5m Mini machines, more trips
Narrow path under 1.2m Hand breaking, conveyors, much slower
Rear lane Often good
Battle-axe / steep / no access Priced individually, sometimes crane

2. Pool size and construction

Bigger pools produce more concrete and need more fill. Thick gunite shells and heavy bond beams take longer to break. Fibreglass is lighter and faster.

3. Full removal or fill-in

Full removal carts all the shell and replaces it with fill. Fill-in leaves the lower shell and needs less carting. See full removal and pool fill-in.

4. Surrounds and extras

  • Coping and paving.
  • Decks.
  • Glass or steel fencing.
  • Pumps, heaters and solar.
  • Retaining walls.
  • Spas.

See surrounds.

Other costs to check

  • Approvals — certifier or council fees.
  • Engineering — if you plan to build over the area.
  • Topsoil and turf — included or not.
  • Rock — pools cut into sandstone.
  • Groundwater — occasionally requires dewatering.
  • Asbestos — on older equipment housings or fences, tested and removed by licensed removalists.

Comparing quotes

Check each includes the same:

  1. Removal method — full or fill-in.
  2. Surrounds, fencing, equipment.
  3. Fill type and compaction method.
  4. Finish level — compacted fill, topsoil, or turf.
  5. Disposal.
  6. Approvals — included or excluded.

FAQs

Questions people ask before they commit

How much does it cost to remove a pool in Sydney?

As a 2026 planning guide: fibreglass pool removal $7,000 to $16,000, concrete pool fill-in (partial removal) $9,000 to $20,000, and full concrete pool removal $14,000 to $35,000 or more. Tight access, large pools, rock, extensive surrounds and fill requirements push prices up.

What is the cheapest way to get rid of a pool?

A fill-in (break-and-fill) is usually cheapest for concrete pools. But if you might build over the area or sell soon, the savings can be outweighed by restrictions and buyer questions later.

Are approval costs included?

Certifier or council fees for any approval are generally separate from the removal price, as are engineering or geotechnical reports if your future plans need them. A quote should say what is and is not included.

Does a pool removal quote include turf?

Not always. Some quotes finish at compacted fill, others include topsoil and turf. Check the finish level stated in the quote.

Why is access so expensive?

Because it decides the size of machine and truck that can be used. A big machine and a tipper reversing into the yard move tonnes an hour; a mini excavator and barrows through a narrow side path move a fraction of that.
